The cultural differences between Jamie Dornan and Ellen became clear when he spoke about his daughter's disco party

TODAY, JAMIE DORNAN made an appearance on The Ellen Show.
He took part in a game called ‘Oops My Water Broke’ in which he got absolutely soaked to raise some money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Before the 36-year-old actor drenched himself for a good cause, he sat down with Ellen to have a chat about his family.
Ellen had lots of questions related to how mothers feel about Jamie when they meet him at play-dates, but eventually the conversation turned to his kids.
Jamie’s eldest daughter Dulcie turns five this November, and for her last two birthdays she has celebrated with a Winnie The Pooh themed party. As a result, Jamie and his wife Amelia are trying to take the parties in a new direction this year, inspired by Dulcie’s latest obsession: discos.

When you’re Irish and you think of the word ‘disco’, you probably think of a sweaty GAA function room, packed with teenagers in their best clothes on a sticky makeshift dance-floor. Maybe you think of the craze that was once a very popular pastime in the mid 2000s: disco dancing. There’s also a pretty good chance you’ll associate the word ‘disco’ with a little old song called ‘Maniac 2000‘.
Despite the obvious origins of ‘disco’, Irish people don’t tend to associate a disco with Gloria Gaynor and Donna Summer. Our idea of a disco is a heavily diluted version, where contemporary pop music is played, rather than hits from the 1970s. Why? Because discos are mostly for children.
This led to some confusion on Ellen, when Jamie spoke about his daughter’s upcoming party. “I think disco is the new thing.” Ellen, just a little bewildered, asked “Does she like disco? Your five-year-old?”
This still made no sense to Ellen, who asked “So does that mean she likes Gloria Gaynor all of a sudden? Just because there’s a light?” Jamie joked, “It’s not a very strong premise for a party. It’s a light. We’re all gonna gather around a light.”
To be honest, no matter how hard he tried, Jamie probably couldn’t have explained an Irish child’s disco to Ellen DeGeneres. He made the right decision by staying quiet.
